Can I Run My House on Solar Power Only in the UK?

Going fully off-grid with solar in the UK is technically possible but impractical for most homes. Here's a realistic look at solar self-sufficiency.

    The Reality of Solar-Only Living

A typical UK home uses 2,900 kWh/year. A 4kW solar system generates 3,400-4,000 kWh — more than enough annually. However, generation peaks in summer and dips in winter, so you'd overproduce in June and underproduce in December without significant battery storage.

    Battery Storage Helps

A 9.5kWh battery covers most evening and overnight usage in summer. But to bridge winter shortfalls, you'd need 30-50kWh of battery capacity — costing £15,000-£25,000. For most people, staying grid-connected and exporting surplus via the SEG makes far more financial sense.

    The Smart Approach

Rather than going fully off-grid, aim for 70-80% self-sufficiency with solar panels + a sensibly-sized battery. This gives you maximum savings, SEG income from exports, and grid backup when you need it.
