    How to Apply for Warm Homes: Local Grant

    Step-by-step guide to accessing up to £30,000 in free home energy upgrades through your local council.

    Application Process

    The Warm Homes: Local Grant is administered by local councils. Follow these steps to apply.

    Step 1

    Check Eligibility

    Verify you meet the income (below £36,000) or benefits criteria and have an EPC of D-G.

    Step 2

    Contact Your Local Council

    Applications are managed by local authorities in England. Find your council's energy efficiency team.

    Step 3

    Submit Application

    Provide proof of income, tenancy status, benefits, and property ownership as required.

    Step 4

    Property Survey

    An assessor will visit your home to evaluate which upgrades are suitable and beneficial.

    Step 5

    Approve Upgrade Plan

    Review and approve the proposed works. There's no cost to you for eligible upgrades.

    Step 6

    Installation

    Approved contractors complete the installation. Quality is assured through TrustMark certification.

    Documents You'll Need

    Prepare these documents before starting your application

    • Proof of income (payslips, tax returns, or benefit letters)
    • Proof of property ownership or tenancy agreement
    • Recent energy bill showing your address
    • Valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
    • Existing EPC certificate (if available)
    • Landlord written consent (for private renters)

    Important Information

    Processing Times

    Application review: 2-4 weeks

    Property survey: Within 6 weeks of approval

    Installation: 4-12 weeks depending on works

    Note: High demand may cause delays. Apply early.

    Application Status

    The scheme launched 21 January 2026.

    High demand caused temporary portal closures in late 2025.

    Applications expected to stabilise through 2026.

    Budget: £5 billion allocated for this scheme.

    Private Renters

    You can apply if you're a private tenant.

    You'll need written landlord permission.

    Your landlord cannot charge you for the upgrades.

    Improvements stay with the property.
