The Warm Homes Loan Scheme: solar, batteries and heat pumps with lower-interest finance
Government-backed loans launched on 27 October 2026. Ten lenders now offer them, some at 0%, with nothing to pay upfront. Greentech offers Warm Homes Loans through our approved lender partners, arranged alongside your quote. Here is how the scheme works and what it pays for.
Up to 5%
off the interest rate of a lender's regular loan
£0 upfront
spread the cost, up to 30 years with some lenders
No income test
open to homeowners and private landlords
What is the Warm Homes Loan Scheme?
It is a loan, not a grant. The government pays approved lenders to cut the interest they charge on loans for low-carbon home upgrades, and the lender must pass every penny of that saving on to you as a lower rate.
You borrow from a normal FCA-regulated lender, who runs its usual credit and affordability checks. The scheme is part of the government's Warm Homes Plan and sits alongside, not instead of, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Worked example from GOV.UK: borrowing £10,000 at 8% over seven years costs around £155 a month today. Through the scheme, the same borrower could save up to £285 a year on repayments.
How it works, step by step
The lender handles the loan. Greentech handles the survey, the scheme-compliant quote, the installation and the MCS certificate the lender needs before it pays out.
- 1
Get a Greentech quote
We survey your home and issue a quote in exactly the format the scheme requires: dated, addressed to you, on headed paper, with our MCS number, an itemised breakdown and the system size in kW.
- 2
Apply for your loan
We arrange your Warm Homes Loan application with one of our approved lender partners. The lender checks your credit and affordability, confirms the measure and property qualify, and verifies our MCS certification.
- 3
We install and certify
Our MCS-certified team fits your system and lodges it on the MCS Installation Database. The MCS certificate is what proves to your lender the work meets the scheme standard.
- 4
Repay at the lower rate
The lender releases the funds and you repay monthly at the reduced rate. Keep your quote, finance agreement, invoice and MCS certificate together for your records.
What you can borrow for
Each technology has its own maximum loan, and the scheme pays towards loans of three years or longer. Installation, labour and essential extras such as scaffolding, grid connection, radiators and pipework count within the cap.
| Technology | Maximum loan | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Solar panels | £15,000 | New roof-mounted systems, or adding panels to an existing one |
| Battery storage | £15,000 | With solar or on its own |
| Air source heat pump | £20,000 | Before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is deducted |
| Ground source heat pump | £35,000 | Includes water source and shared ground loops |
| EV charger | Within the solar or battery cap | Only as part of a solar and/or battery installation, not on its own |
Stack it with the heat pump grant
Installing a heat pump in England or Wales? We apply for your Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and a Warm Homes Loan can cover the rest of the cost.
Not covered by the scheme
Insulation, windows, doors, re-roofing or structural work before solar, and air-to-air heat pumps for now. A lender may offer separate standard finance for these.
The finance options available
Lenders design their own products, so rates, terms and fees vary. These are the three types the scheme supports.
Point-of-sale finance
Arranged alongside your installation, in the same process as your quote. The simplest route where your installer works with a participating lender.
Unsecured personal loan
You apply directly to a lender with your Greentech quote. Not secured on your home, and you can use any MCS-certified installer the lender accepts.
Secured lending
Borrowing secured on your property, such as a second-charge loan or extra mortgage borrowing. Usually longer terms and lower monthly payments, but your home is at risk if you don't keep up repayments.
Shop around and compare the total amount repayable, not only the monthly payment. A longer term lowers each payment but usually costs more overall.
The first ten lenders
These lenders were named by the government at launch on 27 October 2026. More are expected to join as the scheme grows.
Greentech works with approved lender partners, so we can arrange a scheme loan for you as part of your installation. Prefer another lender? You can still take your Greentech quote to any participating lender that accepts it.

Frequently asked questions
Is it a grant? Do I have to pay it back?
It's a loan, so yes, you repay it. The government support goes to the lender to lower your interest rate. If you're on a lower income, you may also qualify for a separate Warm Homes grant through your council.
Who can apply?
Owner-occupiers and private landlords borrowing personally, anywhere in the UK. There's no income limit and no minimum EPC rating set by the government, though individual lenders may ask for one. Landlords with several properties can take a loan for each.
Will I definitely get 0%?
Not necessarily. Some lenders offer interest-free loans, but most cut up to 5 percentage points off their usual rate. Your rate depends on the lender, the term, the amount and your circumstances.
Can I use it with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (and Home Energy Scotland in Scotland) is the only other public funding allowed alongside the loan. It can't be combined with other grants or loans for the same measure.
How long can I repay over?
The scheme supports loans of three years or more, and some lenders offer up to 30 years. Longer terms mean lower monthly payments but usually more interest overall.
What happens if there's a problem with the installation?
Contact us first: we're responsible for installation quality, backed by MCS and our consumer code. Questions about the loan itself go to your lender.
Beware of scams
Loans only come from approved, FCA-regulated lenders. Be wary of anyone guaranteeing approval, asking for fees to "reserve" government funding, or cold-calling about the scheme.
