How do I know if my home is 'off-gas grid' for the £9,000 BUS grant?
Off-gas grid means your property is not connected to the mains gas network. If your heating currently runs on heating oil, LPG (bottled or bulk tank), coal, or direct electric heating, and you have no gas meter or gas standing charge on your energy bills, you almost certainly qualify as off-gas grid. Village properties in Cheshire, north Manchester and rural Lancashire are the most common cases.
My oil boiler still works — can I still claim the £9,000 grant?
Yes. The BUS scheme actively encourages replacement of working fossil-fuel systems. Ofgem does not require your existing boiler to have failed; a working oil or LPG boiler is fully eligible for replacement under the £9,000 uplift between 21 July 2026 and 31 March 2027.
Does my EPC need to be a specific rating for the £9,000 grant?
No. Any EPC rating A–G qualifies, provided the certificate is less than 10 years old. Since 2026, outstanding insulation recommendations on your EPC no longer block eligibility. If your EPC is older than 10 years, a fresh assessment costs £60–£120.
