Can a Normal Electrician Install Solar Panels?

You need an MCS-certified installer for solar panels in the UK — here's why it matters and what to look for.

    Why MCS Certification Matters

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the industry standard for renewable energy installations. Only MCS-certified installers can register your system for the Smart Export Guarantee, which pays you for surplus energy. Without MCS, you lose access to all government incentives.

    What About a Regular Electrician?

A standard electrician can legally do some electrical work, but solar installation requires specialist skills: roof mounting, DC wiring, inverter configuration, and DNO notification. Using an uncertified installer also voids most panel and inverter warranties.

    What to Look For

Choose an installer who is MCS certified, RECC registered (for consumer protection), uses in-house teams (no subcontractors), and has verifiable local reviews. Greentech Renewables ticks all these boxes with 2000+ installations and a 4.9★ Trustpilot rating.
