How Many Solar Panels Do I Need?

The number of solar panels you need depends on your electricity usage, roof size, and budget. Here's how to work it out.

    Quick Sizing Guide

    1-2 bed flat/house: 6-8 panels (2-3kW) | 3 bed semi: 10-12 panels (4-5kW) | 4 bed detached: 12-16 panels (5-6kW) | Large home + EV: 16-20 panels (6-8kW). Each 420W panel measures roughly 1.7m × 1.1m.

    Factors That Affect Size

Annual electricity usage is the biggest factor. Check your bill — the average UK home uses 2,900 kWh/year. If you plan to add an EV charger or heat pump, size up. Roof orientation and shading also affect how many panels you need.

    Don't Over-Size

It rarely makes sense to install more panels than your roof and budget allow. A well-sized system with battery storage delivers better returns than an oversized system without one. Our surveyors recommend the optimal size for your specific situation.
