How Much Does It Cost to Run a Heat Pump for an Hour?

Understanding heat pump running costs helps you budget effectively and compare savings against traditional heating systems.

Heat Pump Hourly Running Costs Explained

The cost to run a heat pump per hour depends on several factors including the size of your heat pump, current electricity prices, and the efficiency (COP) of your system. Here's what you can typically expect:

    Small System

    13-18p

    per hour (5kW system)

    Medium System

    18-24p

    per hour (8kW system)

    Large System

    24-32p

    per hour (12kW system)

How to Calculate Your Hourly Cost

Formula: Hourly Cost = (Heat Pump Output ÷ COP) × Electricity Rate

Example: An 8kW heat pump with a COP of 3.5 running on electricity at 24p/kWh:

    (8kW ÷ 3.5) × £0.24 = £0.55 per hour of full output

Note: Heat pumps don't run at full capacity all the time. Most modulate their output based on heating demand.

Comparing Heat Pump Costs to Gas Boilers

Despite electricity costing more per kWh than gas, heat pumps are often cheaper to run because they're 3-4 times more efficient:

    • Gas boiler: To produce 8kWh of heat costs ~40p (at 8p/kWh gas, 90% efficiency)
    • Heat pump: To produce 8kWh of heat costs ~55p (at 24p/kWh electricity, COP 3.5)
    • With solar panels: Running costs can drop by 50-70% when using self-generated electricity
