Ground source heat pumps offer the highest efficiency and lowest running costs of any heating system. Discover if one is right for your property.
Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are the most efficient heating systems available, achieving a COP of 4.0-5.0 — meaning they produce 4-5 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity. This is higher than air source heat pumps because ground temperatures remain stable at 10-12°C year-round.
This exceptional efficiency translates to the lowest running costs of any heating system: just £400-£700 per year for a typical UK home. Ground source systems also have a longer lifespan of 25-30 years for the heat pump unit, with the ground loops lasting 50+ years.
Ground source heat pumps cost £20,000-£35,000 to install, but with the £7,500 BUS grant, your out-of-pocket cost reduces to £12,500-£27,500. While more expensive upfront than air source, the lower running costs and longer lifespan mean the total cost of ownership over 25+ years is often similar or lower.
When replacing oil or LPG heating, savings of £600-£1,200 per year mean a payback period of 10-15 years. When replacing gas, payback is typically 15-20 years. However, the 50+ year lifespan of the ground loops means the system provides value for decades after payback.
Ground source heat pumps are particularly worthwhile for: rural properties off the gas grid (replacing expensive oil/LPG), larger properties with high heat demands, new builds where ground works can be incorporated into construction, and properties with sufficient garden space for horizontal loops or access for boreholes.
If you have a smaller garden, vertical boreholes can be drilled to depths of 100-200m, requiring very little surface area. Your installer will advise on the best solution for your property and ground conditions.
