Is There Something Better Than a Heat Pump?

For UK homeowners, heat pumps remain the best available heating technology. Learn how they compare to alternatives and how to maximise performance.

Heat Pumps Are the Leading Technology

For the vast majority of UK homes, air source heat pumps are currently the best available heating technology. They offer the optimal balance of efficiency (300-400%), affordability (with £7,500 grants), reliability (20-25 year lifespan), and environmental performance (2-3 tonnes CO₂ saved per year).

While hydrogen boilers and heat networks have been discussed as alternatives, neither is available at scale for UK homeowners. The government's hydrogen village trials have been cancelled, and hydrogen heating is unlikely to be a viable domestic option before 2040 at the earliest.

    What About Alternative Technologies?

Infrared heating panels: These are 100% efficient but rely entirely on electricity, making them more expensive to run than heat pumps (which are 300-400% efficient). They may suit individual rooms but are not cost-effective for whole-house heating.

Biomass boilers: These burn wood pellets and can be effective, but require fuel storage, regular maintenance, and produce local air emissions. They're more suited to rural properties with access to cheap biomass fuel.

Solar thermal: Solar thermal panels heat water directly but only work during daylight hours and produce less energy in winter when you need it most. They work best as a supplement to a heat pump, not a replacement.

The Best Approach: Heat Pump + Solar

The most efficient home heating setup currently available is an air source heat pump paired with solar PV panels and battery storage. Solar panels generate free electricity to power the heat pump, while battery storage ensures this free energy is available when you need it.

This combination can reduce your heating costs to near zero and make your home virtually carbon-neutral. Many of our customers achieve 70-90% self-sufficiency with this setup, dramatically reducing their reliance on the grid and protecting themselves against future energy price rises.
